The Label Controversy

The Original Art: Baroness Philippine de Rothschild commissioned the renowned French painter Balthus, who submitted a delicate pencil sketch of a reclining, adolescent nude girl.The U.S. Ban: The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) banned the artwork, deeming it inappropriate for import. The Solution: Rather than change the art globally, Mouton released an unprecedented blank, cream-colored label version exclusively for the United States market. Because of this, two distinct versions exist today, with the original "Naked Lady" label typically commanding a higher premium among collectors.
