The Wine

Pétrus sits on a small plateau of ancient blue clay in Pomerol, a soil unique to the estate that gives its predominantly Merlot fruit exceptional depth and slow, even ripening. Vinified and aged under the guidance of the Moueix family, the 1993 shows the property's hallmark density and polish. In the glass it offers a deep, saturated hue, with a nose of black cherry, dark plum and gravelly soil notes layered with spice and a touch of cedar. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, built around fine-grained tannins, with black fruit and chocolate tones carrying through to a long, soil-driven finish. Presented here in magnum, a format prized for its slower, more graceful evolution.

What Makes It Special

Pétrus is unclassified yet universally regarded as one of Pomerol's finest expressions of Merlot, a wine defined entirely by its rare clay terroir rather than blending. The 1993 stands out for the concentration and grip it achieved in a challenging vintage, a testament to the site and the Moueix family's meticulous winemaking, further enhanced here by the magnum's ageing potential.
