Rayas Chateauneuf Du Pape 2000

The Wine

Château Rayas is the most enigmatic estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, farming old, low-yielding vines on sandy soils under the Reynaud family's uncompromising, hands-off approach. Unlike its neighbours, Rayas relies solely on Grenache, gently pressed and aged slowly in old demi-muids and foudres rather than new oak. Bottled in magnum, this 2000 shows a garnet-edged ruby colour, with a perfumed nose of red cherry, raspberry, black pepper and truffle. The palate is silky and seamless, opulently textured yet threaded with spice and undergrowth, closing on a long, savoury finish that the large format has helped preserve with grace.

What Makes It Special

Rayas defies Châteauneuf-du-Pape convention by working only Grenache, coaxing a finesse rarely found in the region's typically blended reds. Matured without new oak, its purity and perfume remain untouched by wood, while a silky texture and spice-laden complexity set it apart from more powerful appellation styles. The magnum format lets this famously age-worthy wine unfold at an unhurried pace.
